Bullying Prevention
Bullying is a problem, and my group is here to tell you all about it. First you may be wondering what is bullying? “Bullying is a unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children. The behavior is usually repeated or has the potential to be repeated overtime”(Character.org). There are 4 main types of bullying, there are verbal, social, physical and cyber bullying. Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Examples of this are teasing, name-calling, taunting, and threatening to cause harm. Social bullying is hurting someone’s reputation or relationship. Examples of this are leaving someone out on purpose, telling others not to be friends with someone, spreading rumors about someone, or embarrassing someone in public. Physical bullying is when someone physically touches another person in a way to harm them. Examples could be hitting, kicking, punching, spitting, and pushing.Although the other types of bullying are just as important as this, Physical bullying is the most common. Lastly there is Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place on digital devices such as cell phones, computers and tablets. Bullying affects our community because kids that are bullied can go through depression, anxiety, lower health, and lower grades. Bullying can damage a person to the point where they want to kill themselves. “Bullying is a serious public health problem.” According to CNN, “On December 1,2016 an 18 year old girl shot herself in the chest after being bullied for her weight.” This shows how much just words can get to someone, it really hurts. Everybody should care about this topic because it’s a worldwide problem and it needs to be taught to everyone so that it can be prevented. Others should care about this problem because you never know one day it could be you getting bullied, or even one of your closest friends. We most definitely think if you ever see someone getting bullied, you should report it to an adult before the situation escalates to a bigger problem, if you were being bullied wouldn’t you want someone to help you? The Issue “Bullying is the use of strength or influence to intimidate someone”(Google Dictionary). One way that bullying could start is when the bully is being treated badly so they want others to feel the hurt that they feel, therefore they make others feel the same way. “A victim is a person that is harmed, injured or killed as a result of a crime, accident, or another event of action”(Google). A bystander is a person who is present at an event or incident but does not take part. “People who bully could come in all shapes and sizes. You can’t really look at a person and say they the bully, victim or the bystander in a situation or in general.”Some victims could be threatened to say something to the authorities or to a trusted adult in the situation, other victims are brave enough and report the situation. Even though the bystander technically ain’t getting bullied; they can be blamed for being present or near the situation that is happening. Bullying could be a really bad issue for the community. Bullying could lead to suicide, depression or people could start to consume alcohol or drugs“By Hyun Namkoong:In 2011, almost half of all North Carolina middle-schoolers reported being bullied on school property” (According to North Carolina Health). The most bullying situation is cyber bullying. Online anyone could start saying one thing and then it starts a rumor. Cyber bullying could be a serious problem in our community.” If the bullying situation can’t be fixed; immediately call or go to the authorities and report the problem, no matter the consequences. The television channel Cartoon Network has a program called “Stop Bullying, Speak Up”. They use their child friendly channel to show the impressionable young children the message to stop bullying. But the message still needs to be taken seriously so we need more people to realise that bullying is not a joke. The people at Cartoon Network often make videos advertising the stop bullying speak up movement. They tell the audience about the problems of bullying and and tell them how to get involved. They tell the audience about not being a bystander and to speak up as well as telling them to take a pledge to try to help stop bullying in as many ways possible. Me and my group of course can not broadcast to thousands of children to spread the message of stopping bullying. However we can try and make a impact on a local school. We could visit them. Our plan is to present information in an engaging and fun way to young students who may be starting to experience the effects of bullying. This will be achieved by giving a 10-15 minute presentation to inform and engage the students with the goal of providing the tools to identify and defuse the bullying. This goal will be achieved by sending small groups of 8th grade students to present easy to understand information about bullying. We have outlined a specific plan on how to present information on bullying to young audience that both delivers the information as well as giving them practical tips and tricks on how to identify and combat. First, we will give background checks on parent/teacher volunteers. We will need around 10 or 11 volunteers, with a student to volunteer ratio of 4:1. Next, we need to make groups of about 4 students. These students should not be able to choose their own groups because of work ethic issues. We will make a presentation and will make a video of us “presenting” to teach them. In the presentation we will teach, model, and practice. To teach we will follow the method of teaching, identify, define, and defuse. We will talk to them about what bullying is and how to stop it with fun/interactive songs and acronyms that are easy to learn and remember. We will model it with a practice scenario and then practice scenarios with them. We will need to make sure that all classes have a Smartboard or projector so we can present. If technology is an issue, we can always combine classes. The powerpoint will be on Google Slides so it can be accessed through Google Drive. If this project gets chosen we will need to email or call Lacy Elementary to find out timings. We will need to take things like lunch and end of the school year activities into account. Our service project is crucial to the social success of future students because it informs them at an early age to avoid a major problem that most 8th grade students had to endure. Bullying is a very important topic that most if not all people go through at some point in their lifetime. Addressing things of an important matter at a young age is crucial, especially bullying. We also have a way to present this important information in an exciting way for students as young as five years old can understand. It is also beneficial that 8th grade students are teaching because they have recent personal experiences. This creates a mentor/role model atmosphere. The overall goal is to inform the younger generation of bullying so that they can avoid the struggles that the current middle schoolers have had to endure. By the use of 8th grade mentors this will allow the younger students be more engaged with content and will influence them to do things in their power to stop bullying. We can ensure that it will be achieved in future generations and the overall culture change in students. Works Cited Strickland, Ashley.
